GUEST POST: Top advertising slogans> Willy E. Arcilla

Posted in: branding (INQUIRER.net Blogs)
By: Willy E. Arcilla*( Thank you sir for this information)
Nothing is more enduring in the field of advertising and communications than the slogan or tagline. Advertising experts even theorize that slogans are more important than visual executions because what we hear is what we remember most based on psychological studies. Visual executions change to provide freshness to a campaign, but great taglines endure.Over the years, we have been captivated by many taglines of the most popular brands from cigarettes to colas, soaps to shampoos, from cars to computers, and sports leagues to sports shoes. Advertisers know too well the tagline represents the essence of the brand message that should influence consumer attitude and motivate purchase behavior. Memorability will depend on both the strength of the line and the amount of media exposure devoted to promoting it. However, this is not a chicken-or-egg situation because a good advertiser quickly realizes the power behind a strong slogan that deserves maximum media exposure. So what makes a good slogan? Simple and memorable. Relevant to the target and unique to the brand. Consumer language. In a word, “Brilliant”! Branding... More than a slogan.>Chris Franklin

Ok.

I deal with a lot of local companies and non-profits in the Memphis, North Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas and one of the things I am having a hard time expressing to clients is that Branding is "more than just a slogan." I try to create content that helps identify their company, but many of them have ideas and want those ideas produced and it is a short term solution to what is really needed to help.

Has anyone dealt with the issues like this when working with a regional non-profit organizations? and How do you express to them the importance of long term investments in Branding their non-profit?

Many of my corporate and broadcast clients get it. They have their slogans, but they understand to effectively penetrate the market they must do the 6 things below.

1. Be factual about their services
2. Create the Brand Vision / Mission Statement
3. Define your personality and character (values)
4. Build on relationships with customers/audience
5. Integrated communication / advertising that isn't a direct media buy (word of mouth, publicity)
6. Deliver (a product delivered is an affirmation of the message)

Should we continue to give our smaller non-profit clients what they ask for? (short videos for banquets/fundraisers)

Or... What techniques should we do to get them to see the big picture and invest more dollars in a 6 or 12 month campaign?

BRAND ambassadors & Slogans

Most of the leading brands in the world to achieve the equity factor, and to sustain the Brand loyalty, sign up a “known face” in society, or a celebrity to promote the product or service. The selection of these persons has to be done very carefully with lot of research.

As they should be able to connect with the consumer and sustain the interest. They act as the face of the brand. The contract could be very lucrative, depending on the profession of the selected person. He/She has to be briefed about the clear cut goals and objective of the campaign.(s)

The known faces in India who endorse a brand are Sharuk Khan, Amitabh Bachan, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni, Dravid, Ganuguly, Preety Zinta, Aishwaria Rai, Kareena Kapoor, Saif ali Khan, Youvaraj singh, You will notice that the actors and sports persons are the most sought after. It will be really worth it to study about the contracts they sign up, the fees charged, period in number of years etc.

There is a RISK factor too! If the person suddenly for some reason "looses out" in the popularity chart due to various commercial, professional, personal reasons, then the brand could get a beating too! I dare not quote examples , however your guess is as good as mine!

SLOGANS to support the media/creative, TV commercials, and jingles play a very vital role

Today COKE has signed Goutam Gambir as their BRAND ambassador

Some of the VIPs lend their name for CSR activities of corporates also!

"Good things come to those who wait" Congrats A.R.Rahman R

A new survey claims the Guinness slogan "Good things come to those who wait" is the most commonly used ad slogan in everyday life.!!!!

Well How true! I would like to say Congrats! to ARR, for winning the Oscar for Best Original Score and Best Song Jai Ho. for the Feature film Slumdog Millioaire!

I had the opportunity to work with him on several film projects while working for DTS and then with Dolby.

Thanks to make Indians proud of your double achievement! And to all others who bagged the awards!

yeh dil maange more! ( Hinglish) slogan

Use of "Hinglish"? in Indian ad slogans!

Few decades back,INDIA- means for some, the land of Tigers and Taj Mahal! and for few snake charmers and Ghandi caps.

As I write this...... I am talking about this India in trasition. There is a positive revolution taking place in the markets....shoud I call it the Bazzar.Over 1000 MNCs(Multi National Companies) have shown their keen interest from the domestic market, to this great Jumbo a market available for their products and services. For the local companies Globalization is the mantra now!

This challenging "change" is both predicative and are marketing gurus are working overtime in managing this change, with new economic order- Marketing their brands in India with over Fourteen official languages, with diverse language, culture every 500 kms, is almost a nightmare for the creative team to launch, and sustain the brand in the market. Some of them respond -some perish in this lab conditions!

There are no doubt, effective mediums available for advertising, out door, TV, paper and mags, sampling, and others which are typically INDIAN! and now even in your mobile too! But writing a copy or slogans, in about 10 different languages is a nightmare for the slogan smiths like me!

I feel that one has to adopt radical transformations strategies and formulate actions for positive responses.
As WE dont think in English- ( but we are the second larget nation to have all the skills in this laungaue)International brands has to be very careful entering different markets with in India, chooosing the right words- in local languages for advertising their produucts.

Yes, not forgetting the local successful brands and lables, and the loyalty factor is very deep routed in the minds of customers.

Slogans according to my research for the last ten years, is surely the life line of brands, and thse little tag lines, leap out from billboards,TV screen, and even T shirts. Selling Pin to piano!
Believe me tanslating "PUT A TIGER IN YOUR TANK "( brand ESSO) is easy to translate in ten languges- but....."Have a break- have a kit-kat" well it will just an apology of translations!

While I was working on road shows, ten years back on DTS ( digital thetare systems)a concept introduced that time in India,to translate their slogan 'LISTEN AND BE AMAZED" TO THE Theatre projector operators of fifteen States here, it was a real hard job. The nearest we got was in Hindi.

I take my hats off to all the creative folks, who has made it possible, for the acceptance of "dual-lingo" perhaps soon a new lexicon will be created by the ad world in India soon!!!!! which is now being called as "HING-LISH"???? a blend of noth Hindi and English and brands like Pepsi has shown that it is acceptable and the latest slogan is " A DIL MANGE MORE....." ( A DIL MANGE IS HINDI AND more IS ENGLISH.)and the word "more" in Malayalam which is language spoken in Southern part of Kerala is Yougert!!!
